Sheriff Mike Granthum says the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing — and investigators are pursuing every lead in the case.

Wal Dcshootout0507 Fox Pkg“It was just like a wild, wild west,” said Granthum.

“I mean bullets flying everywhere.”

Granthum says a drive-by shooting at a memorial gathering Saturday night — quickly escalated into a full blown shootout.

“There were over 100 shell casings picked up at that scene, over 100 from several different caliber weapons. Several cars were struck. Several residents were struck. And the subject was struck in the back of the head was a 20 year old male by the name of Chico Madison. After the shots were fired, they actually exited the car and they took off running in between the houses,” said Granthum.

When deputies arrived on the scene — Madison was already being driven to the hospital by personally owned vehicle.

Granthum says Madison died before making it to the hospital. He was found dead in an abandoned vehicle later that night.

“He was alive when he left the scene by all accounts of what witnesses were saying. But when he got to Broad Street he succumbed to his injuries. He was in the passenger seat. So somebody had to be driving the car. Some witnesses that we found stated that a black male subject exited the car, that was actually the driver, and left. He has since been identified and being talked to.”

Granthum says evidence recovered from the crime scene — has been sent to forensics.
