i-TEAM COLD CASE: Murder of Rufus McCants

i-TEAM COLD CASE: A 67-year-old man was shot and killed on July 3, 2022, in Montgomery. So far, police have no clues about where he was shot or who shot him.

Just before lunchtime that day, police and fire medics were called to the 1300 block of North Ripley Street, where a man was suffering from a gunshot wound.

They found 67-year-old Rufus McCants with a life-threatening injury. He was pronounced dead at the hospital later that day.

Police think the shooting happened at another location, but they don’t know where.

“We’re hurt, frustrated,” McCants’ daughter Theresa Berry told Action 8 News. “A piece of our lives is missing — that was our father, and he loved his family, he loved his friends and he loved life. He enjoyed life, and it’s just not fair that he was taken from us like this.”

“Someone knows something, and that’s the reason that we’re presenting it to you guys to put it out there to the public and that person may see it,” Tony Garrett of Central Alabama CrimeStoppers said.

“We just ask that the public say something. If they saw anything or heard anything about our father’s death,” McCants’ son Steven McCants said.
