Two hometown heroes help kick off the new school year in Selma

Waka Scsteachers0809 VoSelma City Schools teachers and staff are fired up — and ready to head back to school — after an energetic Institute Day — Friday at Selma High School.

Two native sons stopped by the event to offer teachers some encouragement and motivation for the new school year.

“The Voice” winner Asher Havon — hyped up the crowd — performing a song he wrote to honor teachers — and the work they do.

“They’re the steering wheel. They’re the wheel of the car that can take these kids, these students to their destinies,” said Havon.

Waka Scsteachers0809 Vo2And former NFL star Michael Johnson — was another special guest at the event.

“Just reminding them the importance of the roles they play in the development of these kids lives that will echo beyond the time, way far beyond the time they actually spend with them,” said Johnson.

“They shape our future leaders.”

Selma City School students head back to school — for their first day on Monday.
