High School Preview: Marbury flag football

Teams across the area are getting ready for kickoff, but Marbury flag football is doing it for the first time. And they’ve managed to get 40 girls on their roster. One motivation for them joining: head coach Thomas Sowell. He’s coached them in the weight room for years and now he’s teaching them flag football plays. He says he’s enjoying seeing all the learning happening.

“For me as a teacher first and a coach second, it’s the best thing,” Thomas Sowell, Marbury flag football head coach, said. “You want to teach the lessons. They learn the lessons, they go out and execute, and when you see it finally click and that light bulb comes on, it’s one of the best moments.”

Some players on the team play soccer with Sowell. These girls come from softball, basketball, soccer — whatever sport you name.

Elizabeth Woodfin, a senior who plays quarterback and wide receiver for Marbury flag football, said, “I wanted to start playing because I’ve always played with my siblings and my dad. My brother is a quarterback, so they’d be out there in the yard throwing, and I’d go out there and throw with them. When we had a team, I definitely wanted to play because I just love sports. Having the ball every possession is great because I’m a pitcher for softball, too. I like to control the pace of the game.”
