Lowndes County Head Start Helping Students Increase Reading Literacy

Literacy among Alabama students is a growing concern across the state. The Lowndes County Board of Education is hoping to curb this concern by equipping students with necessary reading fundamentals. The Alabama Literacy Act, passed in 2019, aims to help ensure each Alabama children can read by 3rd grade. A task taken seriously at all Head Start locations within the Lowndes County Board of Education.

At the 2023-2024 school year around 1800 Alabama students across the state were slated to repeat the third grade because they couldn’t read well enough to move on to the fourth grade curriculum, in which students begin to read for learning as opposed to learning to read. Now, with more than $140 million dollars of state funding The Alabama Literacy Act gives the opportunity for training for teachers to help assist teachers in teaching methods intended to help students read proficiently.

Teachers within the Lowndes County Board of Education and especially their Head Start Program take part in such opportunities to ensure students learn proficient reading skills. Daily reiterating literacy methods throughout each grade level. There are three Head Start programs located at Central, Fort Deposit and Jackson Steele. Children can start the program at the age of three, regardless of when their birthdays occur within the school year.
