TICKLED PINK: Montgomery County Sheriff remembers colleague he lost to cancer

As Action 8 News celebrates Tickled Pink and breast cancer survivors, we want to pause to honor the precious lives that were lost.

One of those people is Lisa Crenshaw, who worked at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and was a friend to everyone who knew her, including to Sheriff Derrick Cunningham.

“She loved her job. She loved coming to work. Everybody knew her from singing, she loved to sing, and she loved to bake cakes, and she loved her grandkids,” Cunningham said.

Crenshaw was diagnosed with breast cancer more than three years ago, but that didn’t slow her down.

“She had a double mastectomy. She was one of those workers that she didn’t let that get her down. She used to go get chemo treatments and come to the office. After one of her treatments, she said ‘No sheriff, I feel fine for what I’m doing. I can just sit right here.’ And that speaks volumes,” he said.

She finally beat breast cancer. But last year, the unthinkable happened. Crenshaw was diagnosed with stomach cancer, which eventually took her life.

“You never knew that she was struggling so hard, but she was and she came to work. When she came to work she had a smile on her face, but she had a pain in her stomach. I was there during the process, and now I was able to be there when she went to the other side,” the sheriff said.

“I’m going to miss that fun, I’m going to miss that laughter, and that smile. This whole agency is gonna miss that because she was that for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. That person that always said ‘I got it. I got it. Hey do we need- I got it.’ And that’s Lisa. Only thing I can tell her is ‘I got it. I got you now and your memories will always be engraved in my heart,'” he said.

Action 8 News is presenting the 10th annual Tickled Pink with a new “Tickled Pink Out Party” on Saturday, September 28, at Riverwalk Stadium. We will remember the life of Lisa Crenshaw and all of the people she touched.
