The Montgomery Police Department has released its 2024 homicide numbers to Action 8 News.

In 2024, Montgomery recorded 61 homicides. That number is down by 14 compared to the 75 homicides recorded in 2023.

In both years, there has been a 69% clearance rate, which means an arrest has been made, according to Montgomery police Maj. Saba Coleman.

How do Montgomery’s numbers compare to Birmingham’s?

Both cities are around 200,000 people when you include only what’s inside Birmingham city limits. Birmingham recorded 151 homicides in 2024, which is the highest number since at least 1933, according to AL.com.
