ACTION 8 WEATHER AUTHORITY: Winter Storm Warning: Snow arrives in Alabama
ACTION 8 WEATHER AUTHORITY: A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for part of the Action 8 viewing area Tuesday, with snow falling in many areas. In some places, snow can be seen on radar, but it is evaporating before it hits the ground.
Snow estimated have been raised. Montgomery could see 2-3″ in some areas. Lesser amounts are expected to the north, such as in Autauga and Elmore counties.
To the south, Troy, Opp and Andalusia could receive 4-6″.
To the west, Selma could get up to 2″. Demopolis looks to receive less than 1″.
The Winter Storm Warning for Tuesday includes the pink counties below. They run in a line from Choctaw, Clarke, Wilcox, Lowndes, Montgomery, Bullock and Lee counties and points southward.
Many counties to the north of that line, including Sumter, Marengo, Perry, Dallas, Autauga, Elmore, Tallapoosa and Chambers counties and points north are in a Winter Weather Advisory.
Travel is expected to be difficult in many areas in the Winter Storm Warning counties. Conditions will be worsening through the day and evening on Tuesday.
The Alabama Department of Transportation is already making preparations with pre-treatment operations. Once the snow starts, ALDOT says it will work to keep bridges and interstates open first, followed by U.S. and state highways based on traffic volume. Remember that travel conditions will likely be worse from Montgomery south, with better conditions to the north.
Regardless of how much snow and ice we get, temperatures will be bitterly cold, especially when considering the wind chill. These conditions will start before the snow falls.
Protect yourself if you will be outdoors.
Now is also the time to prepare your property. Bring pets inside and let faucets drip to avoid frozen pipes.
Temperatures will climb to above freezing on Wednesday in most places. That should allow for melting during the day.
