Suspect in custody after high speed chase in Tallassee

23tallasseeA suspect is in custody after a high speed chase Wednesday in Tallassee.

According to the Tallassee Police Department, officers were called out to the 200 block of Main Street after receiving a report of a suicidal person.

Once they arrived, they found a man, identified as Jason Downs, who refused to get out of his vehicle, then immediately fled to scene, refusing to stop.

Police say Downs led officers on a high and low speed chase through the city where he intentionally hit two separate patrol units with his vehicle and attempted a head-on collision with a third.

Tallassee officers later canceled the pursuit out of abundance of caution for both the suspect and innocent bystander’s lives after Downs fled south on U.S. Highway 229.

Deputies with the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate Downs and continue the pursuit when he turned west on Rifle Range Road.

Police say Downs eventually wrecked his vehicle in the 1900 block of Rifle Range Road in the Redland community and was immediately taken into custody by deputies on the scene.

Downs is currently in the Elmore County Jail.
