The U.S. Department of Education is withholding $4 million dollars in COVID relief funds from the rural school district.

The district was using the money to help fund an ongoing construction project at School of Discovery.

The State Department of Education is appealing the decision to withhold the funding in support of the Selma City School system.

“We’re hopeful to be hearing something from Dr. Mackey and the state department soon about how to proceed with that,” said Superintendent Dr. David Scott.

“So, we’re optimistic in thinking that things will work out. And we’ll continue with what we need to do. But it does not impact the construction of School of Discovery still ongoing.”

The total cost of the SOD construction project is around $17.8 million dollars.
