Baptist Medical Center East unveils NICU expansion

A ribbon-cutting has been held for the expansion of Baptist Medical Center East’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The hospital on Taylor Road in Montgomery is calling the expansion “More Rooms for Miracles” to help newborns and their families.

There are 30 new NICU beds, made up of 24 individual pods and six private family rooms, which are meant to accommodate families who may be staying overnight from out-of-town.

The expansion brings 16,000 square feet of space, with a cost of construction and equipment at nearly $10 million.

“We realized we had an immediate need right in front of us,” Baptist Medical Center East CEO Jeff Rains told Action 8 News. “We had a growing population. We needed a better layout.”

Baptist Medical Center East operates the largest NICU between Birmingham and Mobile. The hospital says the newly-expanded unit is equipped with the highest level of technology and includes high acuity services like oscillatory therapy, nitric oxide and therapeutic hypothermia among its features.
