Montgomery United FC debuts with win over Dothan

Montgomery United FC kicked off its inaugural USL League Two season with a 1-0 victory over Dothan FC Thursday night at Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.

Last year, as AFC Storm, the team became Montgomery’s first semi-pro soccer club and won the Gulf Coast Premier League championship. Now competing in USL League Two alongside Birmingham Legion FC, Montgomery has joined a higher-tier league featuring elite high school and college players, including Birmingham Legion FC.

Despite heavy rainfall throughout the match, Montgomery prevailed in a defensive battle that remained scoreless until the 77th minute. Renan Diniz netted the game-winner after Dothan goalkeeper Yago Darub saved an initial shot from Aidan Riley, but couldn’t control the rebound.

Both goalkeepers delivered impressive performances. Montgomery’s William Blake made several critical saves, inclduing deflecting a Dothan shot off the goalpost, while Darub executed several diving stops before finally conceding.

The victory marks a successful start for Montgomery United as they compete at a higher level after dominating their previous league last season.
