Selma celebrates Memorial Day and honors the gift of freedom

Folks in Selma spent Memorial Day enjoying the day with family and friends — and honoring the sacrifice of the men and women who made it all possible.

Waka Memorialday0526 VoThe local VFW Post hosted the annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday morning at Memorial Stadium.

The community takes time out each year to recognize the men and women who gave their lives in the defense of freedom.

“A lot of people tend to just think, it’s a good three day weekend. Beginning of the summer. We can barbeque. Have a good time. And that ‘s all fine and dandy,” VFW Post 3016 Commander Dennis Doherty.

“The only thing that I ask is take a minute out of your day today to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy today.”

Dallas County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John Hatfield was the keynote speaker at the Memorial Day ceremony.

The VFW Post 3016 and American Legion Post 20 — host the annual event each year.
