Montgomery Public Schools to host farmers market, seeking vendors

Montgomery Public Schools will soon host a farmers market and is looking for vendors to help provide fresh fruits and vegetables.

The school system is hoping to bring high quality and nutritious foods to students and families across the River Region.

School system officials say this new initiative is part of its ongoing commitment to student health, community partnership and easy access to fresh, locally sourced food.

“Our kids need to see farming is important,” Johnna Beard, the director of child nutrition for Montgomery Public Schools, told Action 8 News. “Health is wealth, and what comes from foods, so we are just trying to keep the money within our communities, support our local farmers and just bring awareness to everybody in the community that may not be familiar with that.

“The money collected, if you were interested in participating, it will go directly to that farmer,” she said.

“Hopefully we get positive feedback from the participants. We will also do business with them and have it on our menus in the fall and in the winter.”

The farmers market will take place Friday, June 20, from 8AM-12PM at 720 Grove Street.
