Montgomery Whitewater is marking two years in operation near the banks of the Alabama River.

It was Friday, July 7, 2023, that Montgomery Whitewater opened for the first time, offering whitewater rafting and kayaking in a specially-built 120-acre recreation complex that had been in the works since 2019.

It is one of only three facilities of its kind in the U.S. The others are in North Carolina and Oklahoma.

Since its opening, Montgomery Whitewater has been a concert and dining destination, with more retail development planned to better connect it to Maxwell Air Force Base and to downtown. It has also hosted athletic competitions and emergency training exercises.

There have been many developments at Montgomery Whitewater. Last year, it was named one of Time magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places.”

In recent weeks, it announced a new executive director and the addition of whitewater tubing.

Tomorrow, the Montgomery County Commission is scheduled to consider whether to give Montgomery Whitewater $1 million in additional funding. The money would come from interest earned on American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
