Brewbaker Tech flag football aims to build on last year’s success

The Brewbaker Tech flag football squad is looking to build on last year’s success as it prepares for its third season playing the sport.

The Rams went undefeated in their region last year and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs.

Second-year head coach Kevin Tarver said the team benefited from players’ experience in other sports, including softball, basketball and track. That competitive foundation has prepared the squad to use all they learned last year to make an even deeper playoff run this fall.

“I’ve been coaching defense for like, six years, and last year was my first year calling offense,” Tarver said. “Instead of having adjustments every play, having to think about three and four plays in advance was a little overwhelming at first, but I kind of got the hang of it. Girls are just as hungry in their sports as any boy could ever be.”

Case in point– wide receiver and quarterback Jaila Griffin.

“I just like the intensity,” Griffin said. “I always wanted to play football when I was little, and now I get a chance to play and show the boys what I could do.”

Running back and linebacker Mariana Green has set ambitious goals for the upcoming season.

“One of my biggest goals is to at least become top 10, or if not top five, in the state, as a rusher.” Green said. “I’m really dedicated. I’m really motivated by the sport. I want us to make it to the championship, because I feel like we have the team. We just gotta put everything together.”

Griffin echoed her teammate’s championship aspirations.

“Getting that blue map. Oh, we gotta go there. I’m ready for that,” Griffin said.

The Rams will kick off their season Aug. 21 at home versus Emmanuel Christian.
