i-TEAM Cold Case: Who Murdered Rufus McCants?

Investigators are still searching for answers in a deadly shooting that took the life of a Montgomery man.

“He loved his family. He enjoyed life and he was the life of the party. Whatever he could do to help you he would,” said Theresa Berry

On the afternoon of July 3rd, 2022, Theresa Berry was moments away from calling her dad, Rufus McCants, to arrange plans for a Fourth of July get together. However, before she could pick up the phone, she and her family received some news that would change their lives forever.

“Before I could even call him, my brother called me to say that he received a call saying that our father had been killed. I was in disbelief, and I felt like that this must be a mistake-this can’t be,” she said.

Montgomery Police found the 67-year-old suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound in the 1300 block of North Ripley Street. However, investigators believe the shooting happened at a different location, but they’re not sure exactly where. McCants was rushed to a local hospital where he later died.

“I just never thought he would leave this earth like that. No one deserves to have their life taken like that,” said Berry.

It’s been over three years since McCants was killed and his case has not been solved yet. His family is still desperately looking for answers. CrimeStoppers 215-STOP is offering $2,500 to anyone with information that would lead to the identity and arrest of a suspect.

“We believe that somebody knows what happened to Mr. McCants’,” said Jerome Jones from CrimeStoppers 215-STOP. “It’s just a matter of having that person feel comfortable enough, hopefully from seeing this, that they’ll come forward with some information that would lead to some closure for the family,” he said.

“Please if anybody knows anything about the murder of Rufus McCants please come forward. You would want that justice for your loved one, it’s the right thing to do,” said Berry.
