Woman dead in Opelika crash

A crash in Opelika has claimed the life of a woman.

It happened around 11:39 p.m. Tuesday on I-85 South near exit 57.

Once officers arrived, they located two passenger cars and a semi truck in the roadway.

Police say one of the passenger cars hit a metal mattress spring that was in roadway, causing it to begin sparking.

As the driver of the car was working to remove the spring, the semi truck driver came to a stop in the roadway.

The driver of the third vehicle, then struck the back of the semi truck.

The driver of that vehicle, a 28-year-old female, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
