Montgomery Public Schools hopes to bring retired teachers back into the classrooms

Montgomery Public Schools hosted a fair today to invite retired educators to return to the classroom.

The school system hopes to bring retired educators back — not as full-time teachers, but as mentors and coaches for the next generation of educators.

These are paid, flexible positions designed to support early-career teachers through mentorship and guidance.

The goal is to ease the transition for new educators and ensure that students receive a high-quality learning experience.

More than 125 retired educators from across the district attended the fair.

Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd expressed his gratitude for those who were there.

“I want to say thank you all so much again for joining us on today you’ve given so much to MPS already and the fact that you’re willing to give again means the world to me to the students and to our teachers,” he said.

“There is a great need, and we want to make sure that Montgomery Public Schools is providing A quality education and that is where our retired educators come into play,” Rosanna Smith Brewton, the director of communications for the school system, said.

“Our kids engage with their phones and digital media, but we need to make sure that they get the basics because somebody had to design the program and we want to make sure that they are thinkers and reachers for the things that they want,” Starr Plump, the retired educator coordinator, said.
