Montgomery man sentenced in death of two-year-old son
A Montgomery man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of his two-year-old son.
On July 5, 2022, police were called to a home in the 3600 block of Berkley Drive, where they found Lauren Haggard, Sr,’s 2-year-old son, Lauren Haggard, Jr., with fatal injuries that resulted from blunt force trauma.
Haggard Sr., who pled guilty to murder, was sentenced this week to life without the possibility of parole by Judge Brooke Reid.
During the sentencing hearing, the toddler’s mother spoke about her son and the pain she and her family will forever endure.
Haggard expressed remorse and asked for a sentence that included the possibility of parole.
Judge Reid denied that request, noting the heinous nature of Haggard’s actions, which included beating his son to death and leaving the body to decompose for days before police were notified.
“There are no words that can take away the unimaginable grief that this sweet, innocent child’s mother and family must feel every day,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver. “They will never again get to see his vibrant smile or experience his cheerful personality. He was a bright light who did not deserve to have his life viciously cut short at the hands of his own father. I hope his loved ones can take some solace in knowing that his murderer will spend the remainder of his life in prison, where he can never harm another precious child.”
