WWII veteran celebrates 106th birthday
A World War II veteran celebrated his 106th birthday this week.
The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs and the staff at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home threw a party Friday for Willie Bennett.
The celebration took place at the veterans home in Alexander City.
Bennett was born in 1916 in Marengo County and currently lives at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home.
During his time, Bennett served in Germany and remembers fighting against Adolf Hitler. He also met Dr. Martin Luther King once in Birmingham when he sang in the choir during the Civil Rights movement.
At the party, Bennett received a special commendation from Governor Kay Ivey.
From all of us at Action 8 News, happy birthday, Mr. Bennett!
