ONLY ON 8: Day 5 of the Great Alabama 650

We have hit the midway point of the country’s longest paddle race.

The Great Alabama 650 started Saturday at Weiss Lake and will wrap up on Tuesday, October 14.

Race organizers expect the first paddlers to be in the Mobile Bay within the next 12 hours.

They also expect the first leaders to arrive at the finish line at Fort Morgan within the next 24 to 36 hours.

Not much has changed with the leaders since day 4.

After day 5, Arizona native Christopher Thomas is still currently leading the pack in the male solo category.

In the female solo category, Florida native Salli O’Donnell is still in first place.

And in the two-person tandem team category and the overall leaders, Alabama natives Bobby Johnson and Matt Taylor are still the frontrunners.

Spectators can follow virtually at AL650.com, where a live map will report up-to-the minute updates on the racer’s progress.

In addition, this year’s event features an app where you can follow along using your mobile device.

To download the app, search Endurance HQ in the Apple and Google Play stores. The username for the app is “alabama650@trailrunnerhq.com” and the password is “Alabama650!” The password is case-sensitive.

Action 8 News will have a recap each day on TV and online.
