Prattville YMCA hosts annual Great Grits Cookoff and Festival

It’s always one of the tastiest Saturdays in the fall — The Great Grits Cookoff and Festival is back for its 12th year in Prattville.

Hundreds of grits lovers went to the Prattville YMCA to try out the delicious spin that professional and amateur chefs put on this Southern dish. Not only could they taste the savory samples, many runners laced up their shoes for the Nitty Gritty 5K to raise scholarship money for deserving families and their children to be a part of the YMCA.

There was also live music and plenty of gift and clothing booths to shop at, as well as bounce houses and face painting for the kids.

“The Y is a great place. I mean, it’s a place where you can feel secure. You can feel safe. You know, we have 400 kids in child care every day, and those kids need a place to go. Their mamas and daddies know that the kids are gonna be taken care of, so that’s what we do,” Keith Cantrell of the Prattville YMCA told Action 8 News.

The restaurant that won for best grits was Barberitos and the runner up was Hardees. The winning church was First Baptist Church.
