City of Selma honors legacy & service of Mayor James Perkins, Jr.

The city of Selma hosted a Civic Recognition Ceremony today — honoring the legacy — leadership — and service — of out-going Mayor James Perkins, Jr.

Scores of supporters and well-wishers — along with family and friends — turned out to the event.

Perkins has served three terms as mayor of the historic city.

He was elected as the city’s first black mayor — back in 2000.

“I remember the excitement in the city back in 2000 as a high school student to have our first black mayor,” said Selma Municipal Judge Brandon Wooten.

“I felt the same way then about Mayor Perkins, as I felt when we got Obama.”

Federal — state — and local elected officials past and present — paid tribute to Perkins at the event — and wished him well in his future endeavors.
