Elmore County voters have overwhelmingly voted no to the Enhance Elmore tax plan.
With nearly 97% of the votes counted, unofficial results show 93% of voters said no to raising taxes, compared to 6.5% who voted yes.
The raw vote total was 12,038 no votes to 843 yes votes.
The turnout was a little more than 20%.
The Enhance Elmore plan would have generated $4.5 million per year to build a new jail, increase funding for the county volunteer fire departments and fund infrastructure improvements, like new roads and bridges.
Voters would have paid a flat annual $25 assessment on land, $150 on homes and $300 on commercial properties.
County leaders said that if the plan was turned down, the county commission would have to find a different way to pay for a new jail, possibly cutting funding for other services.
