Montgomery Public Schools unveils new vision for the future

Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd outlined his vision for the future.

MPS officials say the new set of initiatives are designed to expand student opportunity, strengthen academy excellence and alight education with the workforce needs of Montgomery County.

The initiatives allow every MPS student, regardless of school zone, to have access to career-ready pathways.

Under the plan, Carver Elementary would turn into a full magnet school to serve the West Side.

Carver Elementary wouldn’t be the only school converted.

Dalraida Elementary would also turn into full magnet school to serve the East Side.

Dr. Byrd said the reason would expand choice, deepen academy rigor and strengthen the pipeline into the middle and high school magnet programs.

Third, Park Crossing High School would become two schools on one campus.

The idea is to establish a new magnet program within Building F while maintaining Park Crossing’s International Baccalaureate status.

Dr. Byrd said all of the traditional schools would have themed academic academies, like STEM Academies, Health  & Social Services, Business & Finance, and Hospitality & Tourism.

Also, Wilson and Blount Elementary Schools would apply for IB designation, which would establish a complete pathway from elementary through high school.

Montgomery Public Schools would also acquire and re-purpose Trenholm State’s Westside Campus as the region’s Workforce Development Center.

The center would connect students directly to high-demand careers and post-secondary credentials.

Additionally, MPS says it would expand its virtual school program by broadening dual enrollment access and promoting equity.
