Christmas holiday season magnifies need of Wilcox Co. families

Two food giveaways in Wilcox County offer a helping hand to needy families in the community during the Christmas holidays.

The food given to families at the Black Belt Central Alabama Housing Authority drive-thru food pantry — will allow families to stretch the money they have.

Needy families struggle from month to month to make ends meet and the holiday season only magnifies that need.

“We know there’s a greater need because of the holidays,” said Executive Director Dave Fulford, Jr.

“And what we do, we buy more food to giveaway during the months of November and Christmas so they can have whatever food.”

“They blessing families with food for the holidays. And it’s just a blessing for them to bless us,” said Bonnie Johnson of Yellow Bluff.

“I can buy, buy other little things I need.”

Wilcox County is among the poorest counties in one of the country’s poorest states — which makes it one of the poorest counties in the U.S.

“When Jesus called me years ago and said I want you to help the least of these,” said Fulford.

“And I know that’s why God have me here. Because I have a burning desire in my heart to make a difference in somebody life,” Pine Hill Mission Food Bank and Outreach Executive Director Edith Ruffin.

“We’re doing Christmas bags and the grocery. And along with the grocery giving fruit baskets also.”

Pine Hill Mission also provided Christmas gifts for about 60 families.

Black Belt Central Alabama Housing Authority is having a toys and clothes giveaway Friday morning at 9.

It’ll be held at the Lena Powell Convention Center in Camden at 211 Claiborne Street.
