8 ON YOUR SIDE: The way to make local calls in 334 area code is about to change
8 ON YOUR SIDE: As Action 8 News has reported, the way you make local calls in the 334 area code is about to change. That change happens later this month.
Starting January 23, all local calls in the 334 area code must be dialed using 10 digits., using the area code in addition to the phone number. You won’t be able to make a local call by only dialing seven digits.
This is because of a new area code, which is 483, that is being overlayed on top of 334. As we told you last June, there will now be two area codes covering our part of the state.
Starting February 23, new telephone lines in our area may start getting the 483 area code. The people who get those numbers will also have to dial 10 digits to make a local call.
Your existing phone number won’t change, and what’s now a local call will remain a local call, even though you are dialing the area code.
Prices are also staying the same, and you can still call 911 by dialing just those digits.
Remember to start giving out your area code when you share your phone number with others. Medical monitoring, burglar alarms, security gates, call forwarding and other services will need to have the area code included before January 23.
