Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore continues his fight against gay marriage in the state.

But today some are calling for his removal from office.

Moore has issued an order saying the state’s ban on gay marriage was never lifted.

The Southern Poverty Law Center says he’s defying the federal government yet again, and should be kicked out once more.

The U.S. Supreme Court decided last summer that same sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states.

But Chief Justice Roy Moore maintains that doesn’t apply to Alabama.

Richard Cohen at the Southern Poverty Law Center says he needs to be stopped.

“You know, I was a little surprised, a little taken aback by what Justice Moore did, but then of course I realized it’s Justice Moore. He’s a religious zealot, he’s an egomaniac, he, I think, will not stop,” said Cohen.

Moore is telling probate judges the state’s ban on gay marriage still applies and that it never was lifted.
He says it’s the state’s right to decide what to do with the US supreme court decision.

“The chief justices actions are unethical, contrary to law, and he should be removed from office. The state of Alabama deserves much better,” said Cohen.

This isn’t the first time that Moore has been in trouble with the federal government.

He was removed from the same position in 2003. He refused to remove the Ten Commandments monument on the front steps of the state judicial building.

He was reelected to the Chief Justice’s office in 2012.

“This time chief justice moore has urged every probate judge in the state to violate a federal court order. Frankly, it’s much much worse. So we have filed again an ethics complaint against justice Moore,”said Cohen.
