One of two roundabouts on U.S. Highway 80 just off of Interstate 85 has opened in Pike Road.
Today, the Alabama Department of Transportation opened the roundabout at U.S. Highway 80 and Marler Road. This will allow drivers from The Waters and other large communities to have an easier time getting to and from the interstate at Exit 16.
Crews will still be working on the center island and preparing for final paving and permanent striping.
Construction is continuing on a second roundabout nearby. It is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 80 and the road that goes over the interstate. It is scheduled to open later this spring.
The $4.9 million project to build the two roundabouts started about a year and a half ago.
As Action 8 News has reported, the idea to create the roundabouts was first proposed in 2020, with a third roundabout discussed for the opposite side of the I-85 exit.
