SMITHS STATION, Ala, (WAKA) – The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has made two arrests in the armed robbery of a gas station.

At around 10:40PM on February 7, deputies were called to the Marathon gas station in the 16000 block of U.S. Highway 280 in Smiths Station.

They says surveillance video showed two people in dark clothes with their faces half-covered confronting the clerk at the cash register. Investigators say one person had a knife and the other a handgun as they demanded money. The clerk obeyed their demands and both suspects ran out of the store.

Investigators say they saw a vehicle that they believed to be connected to the suspects, which was from a rental car business in Savannah, Georgia. They say 32-year-old Waltnay Jamal Whitfield of Savannah, Georgia, was listed on the rental agreement.

They say the same vehicle was seen on video surveillance at Wind Creek Casino in Montgomery a few hours before the robbery. Video from inside the casino showed two people resembling the people who had committed the robbery, the sheriff’s office said.

On March 24, The U.S. Marshal Service arrested Whitfield in Savannah, Georgia, on a first-degree robbery charge.

With the help of other law enforcement agencies, the sheriff’s office says they identified 35-year-old Zachary Logan Fox of Nashville, Tennessee, as the other suspect. On March 26, they say he was arrested at a bus station in Atlanta, Georgia, and also charged with first-degree robbery.

The sheriff’s office says both men waived extradition from Georgia and are being held without bond in the Lee County Detention Center where they await an Aniah’s Law hearing.
