Man Sought in Marijuana Case Arrested in Alabama

A man wanted in a federal marijuana case is being sent to Texas following his arrest in Alabama.

Authorities say 61-year-old Bobby Duane Bates will be extradited to southern Texas following a court appearance in Montgomery on Monday.

U.S. Marshals arrested Bates in the southeast Alabama city of Dothan on Friday. They say Bates had been living there as a fugitive after being sentenced to 30 months in federal prison on charges involving more than 70 pounds of marijuana.

Bates hadn’t been seen since reporting to a probation officer in Cocoa, Fla., in 2012.

Federal authorities say Bates had been living in Dothan under a pair of assumed names for about a year.

Court records don’t show whether Bates has hired an attorney since his arrest.
