Black bear spotted in Montgomery
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – A black bear has reportedly spotted in Montgomery Friday morning.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources confirmed to Action 8 News that the bear was seen near Forest Avenue Academic Magnet School.
Officials say if you encounter the bear, do not approach it, give it plenty of room to escape and report the sighting to Operation GameWatch at 1-800-272-4263.
This time of year young bears begin to travel in search of mates or to find a new home territory after leaving their mothers. These bears are usually just passing through and are not likely to stick around or be seen again.
This isn’t the first bear sighting in Alabama this summer. As Action 8 News has reported, there have been sightings in Alexander City, Elmore County and Talladega in recent weeks.
Black bears are a protected species in Alabama. Shooting at one is a Class A misdemeanor.
