1 dead, 2 injured in Tallapoosa County crash

TALLAPOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – A two-vehicle crash in Tallapoosa County has claimed the life of an Auburn man.

It happened around 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, June 30 on U.S. 280 near the 93 mile marker, approximately two miles southeast of Camp Hill.

State troopers say 82-year-old Hugh W. Smith was critically injured when the pickup truck he was driving was hit by another vehicle.

After the initial impact, Smith’s truck left the roadway and hit a tree.

Smith was taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment of his injuries and later transferred to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery.

Troopers say on Tuesday, July 14, Smith passed away from his injuries.

Troopers also say the driver and the passenger of the second vehicle were also injured and transported to the hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
