CrimeStoppers, Alabama State University work together to prevent school violence
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – CrimeStoppers, Alabama State University and the Bureau of Justice Assistance are coming together in the hopes of preventing violence on school campuses.
They are hosting a week-long school safety training event. This initiative is part of the Preventing School Violence program to bring together school resource officers, law enforcement personnel, school safety professionals and education leaders from across the region.
It focuses on campus security operations, student engagement and emergency planning to strengthen school safety partnerships.
“Our trainers are all trainers from the National Association of School Resource Officers,” Jerome Jones of CrimeStoppers told Action 8 News. “They are the only body in the country that certifies school resource officers and security guards. Our trainers here have multiple decades of experience as SROs and security guard themselves before they went on to the NASTO training.”
“ASU received a grant three years ago and we just received a two-year extension on that grant because of the relationship that we are building,” Avionne Ruffin of ASU said. “We are providing MPS with these resources that they can’t readily get their hands on, so ASU has become like the facilitator with the money, the grant funding we have.”
On the final day, attendees will participate in additional sessions covering critical topics impacting school safety nationwide.
