Students at St. James School return to class
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) –Â Students at St. James School in Montgomery have now returned to class to start the new school year.
Yesterday, they returned for a half-day, with the standard class day resuming on Monday.
The school has introduced a theme for the 2026-2027 school year, which is “Teaching for Life Change.”
St. James celebrated 70 years in 2025. This year’s student body numbers more than 830, with 68 seniors.
Many of the seniors have been together since their elementary school days. They say today is bittersweet because it’s their last first day of school together before they leave for other opportunities in college or elsewhere.
“Deep down we are all kind of like, ‘dang.’ We’ve grown up with these people and everyone is going to go and do their own thing, and we’re not gonna really have time to hang out with each other when we graduate because we’re all going be doing so much stuff, so we just need to hold onto these last minutes,” senior Charleight Harper told Action 8 News.
“We are here to build up every child from the inside out, and that starts with everything we do in the classroom, how we build character, how we encourage their hearts, how they’re loved. The ways they’re challenged, what they learn, and we just love seeing the growth process,” Head of School Dr. Larry McLemore said.
