Final phase of construction begins at the Dallas Co. Jail

The Dallas County Jail remains unusable — three and a half years after it was severely damaged by a tornado.

The EF-2 tornado that hit Selma in January of 2023 — tore the roof off the jail causing extensive damage inside the building.

About 200 inmates have been housed in jails all over the state — since the jail was destroyed.

Now the Dallas County Commission is set to start the final phase of the project to rebuild the jail.

The budget for the final phase of construction is about $21 million dollars.

Fifteen million came from insurance — and the rest from a loan from the USDA.

Selma based Steward Construction Company is the general contractor for the project.

Construction is expected to begin on September 1st.
