Special U.S. flag display for vision-impaired veterans unveiled in Montgomery
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Members of five chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution have unveiled a U.S. flag display at the Central Alabama VA Medical Center for visually-impaired veterans.
A tactile, bronze-covered braille American flag was dedicated at a ceremony yesterday. It is located on the CAVHCS campus at the entrance of Building 1. It features the Pledge of Allegiance, allowing veterans to run their fingers across the flag. They can feel the physical features of the freedom they defended.
“This is an opportunity to be able to show them that we see them and that we want to honor them for their service and their sacrifice and for them to be able to still experience this symbol of our freedom and being able to visualize through the tactile braille flag,” Amanda Gunn of the Francis Marion Chapter of the DAR told Action 8 News.
“Access to information is the key to independence, the independence that we are celebrating as a country. We need to have that access to information, whether it be electronic format, whether it be braille, I’m glad we have it here,” Bryan Dulude, a blind rehabilitation specialist at CAVHCS said.
