Montgomery Gray 8U softball team caps summer with World Series title
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — A group of 7- and 8-year-old girls from Montgomery are now World Series champions.
The Montgomery Gray 8U softball team was recognized Tuesday night during a Montgomery City Council meeting for its championship run this summer.
The team first won the district championship before advancing to the state tournament, where the girls defeated teams from Luverne, Troy and Montgomery American to claim the state title.
That victory earned Montgomery Gray a chance to represent Alabama at the Dixie Softball Darlings World Series in Bellevue, Florida.
But the road to the championship was far from easy. Montgomery Gray lost its opening game, forcing the team to fight its way back through the losers’ bracket.
The girls responded by winning multiple games, including victories over teams from Florida and Louisiana. They also defeated the defending World Series champions from Virginia.
The run ultimately ended with Montgomery Gray beating Louisiana 6-5 in an extraordinary comeback, earning the 8U World Series championship.
The young champions were recognized Tuesday for their hard work, determination and accomplishment. Congrats to this talented group of young ladies!
