“Stuff The Truck” helps collect needed food, school items for students
Action 8 had a busy Saturday at the 12th annual Stuff the Truck Food Drive. We teamed up with Tie and Doll to collect some much-needed food donations for local students.
“It’s not only a recognition of our school system, our teachers, and our students, it’s a recognition of us helping our community,” said Kerrigan Garner, the president of the Tie and Doll Team Board. “We’re out here gathering non-perishable food items and school supplies for our teachers so they can help the students throughout the year.”
Tie and Doll, which is a student leadership program, and Action 8 joined other community organizations for the event outside the Piggly Wiggly Food For Less on Vaughn and Taylor roads.
Items donated will go to students in need.
“In this current environment where we dealing with high food prices, food insecurity, that sort of thing,” said Traci Howell, the executive director and founder of Tie and Doll. “And so we just want to make sure that we are able to fill in the gap and provide the support that not only the teachers need but offer students and their families.”
Members of the leadership program help organize and lead the event. Donations are packed into backpacks and distributed through Montgomery Public School’s Backpack Program.
“I feel like just community service brings everyone together and we can all celebrate throughout that,” said Melanie King, a Tie and Doll member at large.
New this year — donations of school supplies will help teachers with those out of pocket costs.
“Giving is always good, so just to help unfortunate kids, or kids that need extra help is always a good thing,” said Patricia Kimbro, who donated some items for Stuff the Truck.
“Just to help some of the schools that are less fortunate with supplies or either with snacks and things like that,” said Lametrie Jackson, who also dropped some donations off.
Also a new addition was a community resource fair to help make the event even better than ever.
We are excited to announce that we collected 7,000 thousand pounds of food, 400 pounds of teacher supplies, and more than $1,400 in cash donations, with more still coming in.
Action 8 wants to thank everyone who came out on Saturday and helping make the event a big success.
