Troy University addresses suicide prevention in college-aged students
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Troy University has hosted the 2026 Alabama Higher Education Suicide Prevention Conference on its Montgomery campus.
The conference brought together professionals from higher education, healthcare and community organizations from across the state. They focused on strengthening partnerships, sharing evidence-based practices and equipping attendees with practical strategies to support student well-being and suicide prevention.
This year, the conference was centered on the theme “Partnering for Prevention – Campus Plus Community Impact.”
Dr. Kanessa Miller Doss, co-founder of Alabama Higher Education Suicide Prevention Conference, spoke to Action 8 News about the need for these services.
“Mental health and suicide is of growing concern in every gambit of life. Every age, every group. Here in our center of influence within the college community, we feel that it is very important that we build connections and partnerships that we can better help our students, but not just our students because we are a family. It is the entire community that we want to come in and give the services that are needed. So that’s why events like this are important because now we’re able to make connections, create partnerships and save lives.”
Alabama’s Garrett Lee Smith Campus Suicide Prevention Grant helped fund the conference.
