Montgomery Police Department, worship leaders join together for prayer
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Members of the Montgomery Police Department, along with Operation Good Shepherd and area church leaders, have joined together for an evening of prayer.
Yesterday at the Riverfront Amphitheater, they held “Montgomery For Jesus,” a four-hour event that included prayer, worship and music.
Montgomery Police Department Chaplain Chauncey Ballard and Operation Good Shepherd Advisor Leo Lewis, Sr., say they began putting this event together two months ago and received a lot of response from residents who want to do something to stop violence in the city
At the rally, prayers were offered by church leaders from throughout the city.
“Everybody in Montgomery is tired of waking up to, this person shot, that person shot. The police department is not to blame. (Mayor) Steven Reed is not to blame. They can’t be in every place at every time. We, as a baptized body of believers, have to pray and believe that God is going to change it,” Ballard said.
Jo Hancock, the founder and executive director of His Vessel Ministries of Montgomery, prayed:
“The people of Montgomery, to the inhabitants of this place, we are asking you to be near to us, oh God, even in our unfaithfulness you have given us the opportunity, you have given us the time to come back to you, because Father, we have committed every bit of our sin, our wickedness, our deceitfulness has been against you and you alone.”
The Operation Good Shepherd Program consists of area clergy and is a partnership between the Montgomery Police Department and worship centers. The purpose of the program is to provide support and encouragement to the families and loved ones affected by acts of violence.
