Opelika man dies nearly a week after wreck in Chambers County

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – An Opelika man who was injured in a two-vehicle crash in Chambers County has died of his injuries.

Alabama State Troopers say 82-year-old Robert Stewart died Saturday, August 29, following the crash, which happened Sunday afternoon, August 23.

State troopers say Stewart was a passenger in an SUV driven by 81-year-old Frances Stewart of Opelika that was hit by a pickup truck that was driven by 35-year-old James Graves of Auburn. The impact caused the SUV to overturn.

Investigators say Robert Stewart was flown to Piedmont Regional Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia, for treatment. Frances Stewart was also injured and was taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

The wreck happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 280 and Seals Street, about two miles west of Waverly.
