Group hopes to save former Edistone Hotel building in downtown Selma
SELMA, Ala. (WAKA) –Â The new owners of the Edistone Hotel property in Selma have brought in a team of experts to assess the building in the hopes of saving it.
That team included an architect, an engineer and a construction consultant. Their goal is to stabilize the building and prevent it from further decay.
The Edistone Hotel was built in 1855 on Water Avenue near the Alabama River, with a history older than the Civil War.
The national non-profit, “The Conservation Fund,” acquired the property last year to try to save it from decades of neglect.
“We understood it’s going to be a huge challenge,” Phillip Howard of The Conservation Fund told Action 8 News. “But understanding the history of the place, and me believing we can save the world, we jumped into this project. We’re exited about trying to figure out a solution with our partners to see if we could preserve this space. And to be honest, it’s challenging, but it is so worth it.”
