Macon County Schools closed Monday after weekend shooting involving students
MACON COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – Macon County leaders have announced that schools will be closed Monday after a weekend shooting in Tuskegee.
Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee made the announcement on Facebook overnight, saying the incident happened in the area of Pruitt Street near Howard Road.
It is unclear what led up to the shooting, how many students were involved, the extent of any injuries or fatalities, or if a suspect is in custody.
“This is a heartbreaking night for our community,” the mayor’s statement reads. “There is nothing more painful than seeing violence forever change the lives and futures of our young people and their families. I ask our community to keep the families affected and our City and entire County in your prayers.”
Macon County Schools superintendent Dr. Melissa T. Williams-Myrick made the decision to cancel school, after speaking with police.
Williams-Myrick also releasing a statement on social media, saying “The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide additional information as it becomes available. Please keep our students, families, and community in your thoughts and prayers. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Tuskegee police are investigating.
