Montgomery City Council approves $373 million budget for FY2027
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Montgomery City Council has approved the city’s 2027 fiscal year budget.
The budget was passed unanimously during Tuesday night’s council meeting. City council president C.C. Calhoun says the vote was delayed at the last council meeting to give council members time to work out some issues.
“It took some time, some recess meetings, some conversations that we needed to have,” said Calhoun. “So we came together as a council to move forward. I think it’s a good budget. The council worked out some issues that we had administrative-wise, and so we came together and voted unanimously. Anytime as the president of the council trying to lead together, you’re trying to bring together for the best for the city of Montgomery. I think everybody thought it was a good budget. There were some things we had going on internally that we had to work through, so we came together over these last seven days to get those issues worked out. And we’re moving forward.”
The $373 million dollar budget includes funding for public safety, city infrastructure, and government efficiency improvements. It also includes raises for city employees.
“A budget is more than a collection of numbers. It is a statement about our priorities and the kind of city we are working to build,” Mayor Reed said. “This budget allows us to continue investing in public safety, supporting the employees who deliver essential services every day and strengthening the neighborhoods and infrastructure that make Montgomery work. I appreciate the City Council’s consideration and approval of this budget, and I look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of the people of Montgomery.”
Public safety funding is a major part of the budget, with approximately $126.7 million going towards funding for the Montgomery Police Department and Montgomery Fire/Rescue. According to the proposal, $65 million will go towards the Montgomery Police Department and $61 million for Montgomery Fire/Rescue. Mayor Steven Reed says the funding is an investment in law enforcement, fire protection, emergency response and the personnel who provide those services.
“We have positive momentum in Montgomery, but maintaining that momentum requires discipline and continued investment in the fundamentals,” Reed said. “Our responsibility is to use taxpayers’ dollars wisely, provide the services residents expect and make decisions today that put Montgomery in a stronger position tomorrow.”
The FY2027 fiscal year begins October 1, 2026.
