Montgomery Rotary Club welcomes international military officers to city
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) –Â Members of the Montgomery Rotary Club are taking time to welcome a special group of military officers.
Last night, the Montgomery Rotary Club welcomed military officers and their spouses from around the world to the city at the club’s 36th annual International Night. The event is a reception for those officers who will be training at Maxwell Air Force Base for the next year.
Dozens of countries were represented.
Many officers who train at Maxwell will become ambassadors or high-ranking military officials in their home countries. The U.S. State Department invites these officers here, as a way to create lasting bonds with other nations.
“One of the things we have internally, and why we’re so successful is because of the support that we get from Montgomery and the River Region,” Col. Pedro Matos, the commandant for the International Officer School told Action 8 News. “Every year, they put this great event together for our international officers and their families. This is a great opportunity for them to interact with each other. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the partners and community. It’s also a great opportunity for our partners in Montgomery to learn about international missions that happen at Maxwell Air Force Base.”
Rotary International has a mission to promote peace and goodwill worldwide.
The Montgomery Rotary Club was started in 1913 and is the largest Rotary Club in our area.
