Alabama to issue new car tags in 2027

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The State of Alabama is preparing to issue a new standard car tag design in 2027 as well as to offer a “blackout tag” for the first time.

The new standard design highlights the state’s more rugged countryside, like what you might expect in the mountains of northeast Alabama. The tag will replace the current tag, which shows off Alabama’s beaches.

In recent decades, the state has alternated between beach scenes and those from North Alabama.

In addition, the state will also give vehicle owners an option for a “blackout tag,” which has been popular in other states like Mississippi and Tennessee. It’s simple, with white lettering over a black background, for people who prefer this look.

This design will be an extra $50, with the money going to a scholarship program for families of long-term law enforcement officers for tuition and fees at participating in-state colleges and universities. It will be available January 1.
