Alabama, Auburn teaming up once again to fight hunger in the state
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The rivalry between the University of Alabama and Auburn University is one of the biggest in college football, and student leaders at both campuses are teaming up to help fight food insecurity throughout the state.
Students and mascots joined Gov. Kay Ivey at the Governor’s Mansion today to kick off the “Beat Bama Food Drive” and the “Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger Food Drive.” This competition has been going on for 33 years. The purpose is to bring college football fans together and raise money. All proceeds will be given to food banks in East and West Alabama to help feed hungry families.
“Give what you can, spread the word, and help your team run up the score. So whether you yell ‘War Eagle’ or ‘Roll Tide,’ we can all agree on beating hunger,” Gov. Kay Ivey said at the kickoff.
Last year, both schools collected more than 1.2 million pounds of food. Overall, more than 12 million pounds have been collected over the decades.
