MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – For the first time since 1952, Montgomery has a new city flag.

The new flag was hoisted for the first time in a ceremony this morning to fly at Montgomery City Hall. It had been approved by the Montgomery City Council in May.

The idea for the change came from Jeremiah Treec from when he participated in Youth In City YMCA program, which allowed high school students from all over the city to spend time at City Hall to watch how City Council works. That led to the Change The Flag, Grow From History campaign, which took off on the Internet in 2024.

The design submitted by Joshua Gordon, with several modifications, was how the new flag came together.

The new flag incorporates several elements representing Montgomery and its people:

  • Red diagonal bands symbolize momentum, movement and Montgomery’s evolving story.
  • A blue ceremonial ribbon represents renewal, unity and new beginnings.
  • Nine old gold stars represent Montgomery’s nine City Council districts.
  • A central outlined star represents Montgomery’s role as Alabama’s capital city and serves as a symbol of unity and leadership.
  • Olive branches above and below the central star represent peace, resilience, growth and goodwill among Montgomery residents.

“The youth, really, those are the people that took in action. Those are the people that knew how to work change.org and they came in and they pushed it and they did what needed to be done to get me here today,” Treec said.

“I hope that a child one day can see the flag and represent and understand that that’s their city and I hope that someone who’s lived here for generations can see some familiarity in it and I hope that future generations see it as a symbol of where we’re going and it’s just that where we are where we’ve come from and where we’re going next,” Gordon said.

“Beginning today, all official City of Mo0ntgomery flags will be updated to this new design. With this change we reaffirm our commitment to celebrating our heritage while reflecting the values of the Montgomery we continue building — one of unity, creativity, resilience and hope,” Mayor Steven Reed said.
